School visits, events and festivals

“A brilliant writing workshop with Liz Flanagan. The children were engaged from start to finish and responded enthusiastically to the well-paced and interactive morning… Liz was so enthusiastic and positive with them, they felt confident in sharing…”

Kim Lane, Year 6 Class Teacher, Denholme Primary School

“Liz's assembly was fascinating and engaging - the kids were full of questions and really animated. Liz worked brilliantly with the pupils during her workshops and they produced some unique writing of which they were extremely proud.”

Jack Stoker, Reading Co-ordinator for Key Stage 2, Whitehill Community Academy

For any schools considering booking an author visit, please do read this guide from the Society of Authors.

I can run up to four sessions per day plus book signings, which may be a mixture of assembly talks, class-size creative writing workshops or Q&As. What I do: describe my books, where ideas come from, how books are made, invite children to take part in ‘creative warm-ups’, think like authors, and start a story (in the workshop events). My style is calm and encouraging, warm and positive. I’m don’t do high-energy, stand-up-style talks. But I do use all my writing experience and my PhD in creative writing to create age-appropriate activities aimed at KS2.

I charge £450 for up to a full day plus travel and accommodation if needed, or £300 for up to a half day plus travel and accommodation if needed. Discounts are available for local schools (West Yorkshire area). I can recommend a fantastic schools book supplier if you don’t have a local independent bookshop. Please contact me for details and to arrange a visit.

Online visits

I can offer tailored online author visits using either Teams, Zoom or your preferred platform, for your school, library or bookshop.

Ideal for schools with lower budgets or those further away from my location. As online activities have soared during lockdown, I will continue to offer this option.

Events are supported by booksales, either via your local bookshop, or direct from my publisher, and I charge a lower fee than in-person events, to cover preparation and delivery time.*

*Authors earn a significant proportion of their incomes from school visits, and this is also working time for us - and time spent not writing the next book! However, if budgets are a problem, please do let me know and I hope we can come to an arrangement.

Please contact me to find out more.

WORKSHOPS IN OTHER SETTINGS

I have worked with groups from pre-school to postgraduate level, as well as working with adults who have no previous writing experience. I can create a tailored workshop for your group. Please contact me to find out my availability and discuss your requirements.

TESTIMONIALS

“I have no hesitation in providing a glowing testimonial for Liz Flanagan.  Her events are filled with an eloquence and an enthusiasm that is infectious.  She has an innate ability to capture the imaginations and create intrigue among young readers developing an excellent rapport and providing a full and inspiring account of her creative processes.  Liz is a hugely exciting new talent and is talented in stimulating and motivating young people to read.”
Jake Hope, Reading Development and Children’s Book Consultant

“Liz’s experience of events is evident from the start - she wonderfully engages the children quickly, asking questions, involving them in such an encouraging way and also giving them so much to think about.”

Corinne Gotch, School Events Manager, Tales on Moon Lane Bookshop

"Liz had the young people utterly engaged by both her reading from her recent YA novel Eden Summer, and subsequent talk about her life as a writer and Q & A session.  She had an extremely good manner with the group and there was an easy, natural rapport between her and the young people asking questions about writing, which had threaded through it her own genuine and infectious love of reading.  I can thoroughly recommend Liz as a reader for schools.”
Anna Taylor, Arvon

“The children at our school came alive during the visit. They were left with a lasting inspiration to begin creating their own stories. It was a fabulous experience to be able to hear first-hand about the events that inspired and shaped such a wonderful novel.” Max Coleman, St. Oswald's Church of England Primary School

“{A} brilliant writing workshop with Liz Flanagan. The children were engaged from start to finish and responded enthusiastically to the well paced and interactive morning - a good combination of extracts from the book and writing tips and ideas.  Liz was so enthusiastic and positive with them they felt confident in sharing their dragon egg ideas and putting pen to paper. Furthermore they were keen to continue writing their descriptions after the visit and have been really enjoying the story of Dragon Daughter.'“
Kim Lane, Year 6 Class Teacher, Denholme Primary School

“Having Liz come into our class was a really enjoyable experience for the children. They loved listening to the stories and it was a great opportunity for them to ask an author about the writing and publishing process. Getting tips on developing their own stories was another highlight and they were clearly inspired to get writing! Thank you.”
Lucy Barker, Class Teacher, Hebden Royd School

“Liz was an absolute pleasure to work with, her session-planning and preparation were meticulous and her delivery was thought provoking and inspiring. Liz is sensitive to different writers' needs and abilities and ran a very creative workshop that resulted in some fantastic writing.  We would love her to come back and work with us again.”
Janine Bullman, Word of Mouth Writing Group

“I would recommend Liz’s approach, attitude and demeanour to anyone wanting to promote literature with young (and old) people. She was able to take her technical skill and creativity to craft a bespoke story to use as part of the session. This was further aided by Liz’s manner which wove the magic of the story tighter together, creating spell binding sessions.”
Grant Lowe, National Trust

MENTORING TESTIMONIALs

“I can’t recommend Liz highly enough. She has been like a miracle worker! She put her finger on the key problems with my book on our first call and her feedback has totally transformed the writing experience for me, enabling me to really get into the flow of the story. As a result of her expertise, I am now putting the finishing touches to my book and even considering sending it out to agents. I just hope that she will help me with my next project!”

Catherine Allen

"Liz mentored me as part of the WriteMentor summer programme, and her guidance and advice on my middle grade adventure story were absolutely invaluable. The notes I received from Liz were clear, insightful, detailed and always so kindly phrased. I immediately felt that she understood my story and characters, and her genuine enthusiasm for my writing was extremely encouraging and made me feel so much more confident going into the submissions process. My story is without a doubt much stronger as a result of Liz's mentorship, and I know I will take her advice forward into future writing projects."

Becky Orwin

“Working with Liz was one of the highlights of 2020. She was both caring and diligent in her approach to offering feedback and would always kindly suggest different ways which always made me feel my stories were safe with her. After three months of mentoring my writing group noticed an improvement in my writing and it was with her notes on my opening chapter which granted me a space on HarperCollins Author Academy in the Fiction Division.”
